1. Undersanding Google & Google's page ranking method.

Have you ever wondered how a search engine works? You don't get to the 1st page by mistake, but it can be done. When you perform a search on Google, the process is as follows:

1) Google searches and returns all the pages matching the relevant search terms (keywords)
2) Ranks pages in order of keywords ( like frequency, word value, repetition)
3) Reads the inbound anchor text on the webpage
4) The page rank then determines the order of the sites listing
5) You see 20 search results in order of ranking on each page

Ever heard of Google's page rank algorithm? Doesn't suprise us if not, the fact is, most people haven't. Check it out below:

PR(U) = (1-d) + d * sumV(PR(V)/N(V)).
PR - page rank
U - page you are viewing
D- Damping factor
V- page that links to your page

Basically this equation says: Links to your page say its good and the more links you receive the better the page. Simple eh? This comes from the old saying, everbody knows somebody famous through somedbody else. In today's web world, there's no rank for the loners, so get connected and spread the word about your site. " What you sow, your reap" is a true statement to consider when working to improve your rankings.

2. Understanding your page rank.

Ok, if you've had a website for awhile now, and want to increase the ranking, you first need to know what your page rank is. The only acurate way to find Google's ranking of your site is to download the Google toolbar. Every page indexed in Google is listed from 1-10. If you see a 0, it means Google has no information about your page. The higher the number the better the rank, the higher the rank the better the likelyhood of your page coming up first. The results are done mathimatically (hence Google's algorithm equation above), ordered between 1 and 2 million - simplified they're listed 1-10. Most good websites are around the 3-5 listing rank. Any rank over 5 is very good, having hundreds of reliable links.

3. Creating your page rank.

So you've built your site, but have no one linking to you. What do you do? Link to yourself! Just say your website has 10 webpages - link 9 of them to your home page, and there you have it. After you have your inside links set up, start getting external links. Place you website in free directories, write blogs, submit your site to search engines, etc. Don't spam though! You don't want to do anything illegal or get your site blacklisted.
